This class is to become a ATSSA MA Certified Flagger. This course will allow you to work for construction companies in the state of MA. ATSSA is the American Traffic Safety Services Association. The New England Flagging Academy is a recognized MA DOT trainer.

All students must have a CPR card or First Aid Card to complete the class.

What Does the Flagger Course Entail?

The Flagger Certification Course consists of the following elements:

  • ATSSA National Flagger Course or MA State-specific Flagger Course*** (4 hours)
  • American Red Cross CPR (4 hours)

***The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is accepting ATSSA’s MA-Flagger Certification Training.  Students must provide verification of First Aid or CPR training as a prerequisite to taking the flagger course.  New England Flagging Academy also provides CPR training as well.

The courses consist of lecture instruction with visual aids and hands-on exercises.  The flagger’s role is to protect project personnel and provide safe, courteous, and authoritative directions to traffic seeking passage through the work area. This course will teach students standard flagger control references, proper flagging signals procedures, and standard flagger practices for various situations. The student successfully achieves certification upon passing the written examination at the end of the course.

Students may take both of the above courses, or simply choose to enroll in those relevant to their potential employment requirements.
