ATSSA Flagger National Certification Course
What Does the Flagger Course Entail?
The National Flagger Certification Course consists of the following elements:
- ATSSA National Flagger Course (4 hours)
The courses consist of lecture instruction with visual aids and hands-on exercises. The flagger’s role is to protect project personnel and provide safe, courteous, and authoritative directions to traffic seeking passage through the work area. This course will teach students standard flagger control references, proper flagging signals procedures, and standard flagger practices for various situations. The student successfully achieves certification upon passing the written examination at the end of the course.
Students may take both of the above courses, or simply choose to enroll in those relevant to their potential employment requirements.
The National flagger course graduates will be certified to work in the following New England states: Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Certified courses in both the National & Massachusetts specific flagger course enabling graduates to work in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Maine.
Approved ATSSA Flagger Certification Programs
All State Flagging Academy (ASFA) utilizes American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) instructors. These instructors are committed to providing the best training to their students, and to ensure that every graduate makes safety their utmost priority.
ASFA is approved to perform Flagger Training to interested parties in order to certify them to perform flagging duties in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in accordance with 701 CMR 7.00.
